Central City, Colorado - The "Richest Square Mile on Earth" is nestled in the Rocky Mountain foothills, just a short drive west of Denver with ski areas located in close proximity to I-70.

Central City once was home to 40,000 gold miners, prospectors, and residents after gold was discovered in 1859. Now it's the home of some 500 residents and dozens of ghosts in its historic downtown businesses and hillside homes. Travelers will be warmly welcomed and enjoy rest and rejuvenation at the Hooper Homestead Guest Quarters, BBIC approved and inspected.

Festivals and celebrations such as the Lou Bunch Days, Freedom Festival, Rhubarb Festival, The Great American Heritage Music Festival, Cemetery Crawl, Tommyknockers Weekend, and Ghost Tours keep days and nights lively throughout the year. Don't miss the opportunity for a Victorian Tea and see Central City lit up in its Christmas finery.

Casinos on the main streets provide entertainment, while unique shops offer diversity to visitors year round. Central City is home to the oldest church in Colorado, St. James Methodist, and several cemeteries dating back to the gold rush. Self-guided walking tours, gold mine tours, and Jeep trails allow visitors to interact with the city's history. Summers bring 3 world-class operas to town in the historic Central City Opera House. The Gilpin County Historical Museum offers summertime tours of historic homes. The Gilpin County Arts Association is open with juried shows from area artists and is home to a replica of the original jail. Central City is proud of its recent designation as a Colorado Main Street Community. Visit the Central City Colorado Web site for all your visitor information and event listings.
